A glimpse of Carolyne Roehm’s book tour

With Spring in full bloom at Weatherstone, Carolyne Roehm has been criss-crossing the country on her Flowers book tour. From Phoenix to Washington D.C, Carolyne has been warmly welcomed at each event.

We wanted to share a few images from recent book signings and give you an “insider’s view” of the tour. Enjoy!

Celebrating the Hill-Stead Museum’s May Market

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Carolyne Roehm will be speaking at the Hill-Stead Museum’s May Market in Farmington, Connecticut on May 10th 2013. You will share the journey Carolyne takes with her flowers from bulb planting to table arrangement. Then watch Carolyne demonstrate how to create one of the arrangements from Flowers.

Carolyne Roehm at The Skirted Roundtable

Just in time for spring to start popping out, we have a wonderful chat with the multi-faceted and talented Carolyne Roehm.  From her start as a fresh faced mid-western college grad taking on the famed New York garment district in the early 70s to her long tenure with Oscar de la Renta, her own fashion label, personal ups and downs and some pretty romantic sounding adventures in Europe – Carolyne shared much of what makes this gentle presence such a long lasting force in American style. Her passions are well documented in several publications and her latest is titled simply Flowers which showcases the amazing beauty found in her own gardens at Weatherstone, her Connecticut home. While she does have help, she is clearly a hands-on gardener. In order to capture her flowers at their most beautiful moments, Carolyne realized that she needed to be the one to shoot the images for the book as well, and so she did. It’s truly a feast for the eyes.

Divine Design by The Classic Preppy

I cannot tell you how excited I was to know that Carolyne Roehm was coming to Richmond to speak at The Woman’s Club.  Ms. Roehm and Charlotte Moss are my two favorite “go-to” style mavens. As you may remember, I was fortunate enough to spend an afternoon with Ms. Moss only a few months ago.  Although I only met Ms. Roehm briefly as she was signing books after her talk, she was gracious and hospitable in every way.  Both women are American treasures.  They have redefined classic elegance for the modern age.

Lunch with Carolyne Roehm by Jaimee Rose

The patron saint of blue and white visited the Phoenix Art Museum this week to share her life’s story about being an independent woman. Author and interior designer Carolyne Roehm grew up in the midwestern “boonies” and dreamed of being a big New York fashion designer. She married fabulously, was divorced oh-so-publicly, and still made her dreams come true. I loved listening to her funny, self-deprecating tales and admiring the tablescapes created by local designers in her honor. Ellen Katz always brings illustrious talent to town. Capturing Moments in Bloom

Ms. Roehm’s first book, in 1997, was about flowers, but “Flowers,” her 11th and latest, features photographs she took herself. She first started getting interested in the medium through classes at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colo.

“I grew enamored with not only the fact that I wanted to capture my garden, but I fell in love with the process of photography,” she said.

Ms. Roehm believes that photographing gardens is challenging in particular “because of the light.” You have to either shoot either early in the morning, or late in the evening. She has found that “unless you’re one hell of a photographer,” garden photos are “not nearly as beautiful as what reality is.”

She is particularly interested in flowers because of their beauty. “I think flowers are magic,” she said. “Mother nature just gets it. When she does beauty, she really does beauty.”

When it came to a book party for “Flowers” at Carlton Hobbs on East 93rd Street, she tried to be untraditional. “Everyone and their goldfish has a book party,” she said. She asked an artist friend, Vladimir Kanevsky, whom she has been collecting since the late 1980s, to interpret some of the flowers she photographed in porcelain. In terms of fresh flowers, “I didn’t want to have a lot of them, because I didn’t want to detract away from his.” So she simply added a few carnations, a type of fauna she helped resurrect back in the 1990s (“when everyone was hating carnations”) and Christmas greens.

Carolyne Roehm’s Newest Tome is a Botanical Bounty

A study in tulip variety featuring Roehm’s favorites, red and whites. 

“With the launch of Carolyne Roehm’s latest book with Clarkson Potter called Flowers, readers are in for a real horticultural treat. Fourteen years after her first book, A Passion for Flowers, she is back to share more “floribundance”, with a deeper look at her gardens through the seasons and what they yield at her hand. The over sized (gigantic in a fabulous way)  book is packed with lush imagery (over three hundred photos, most photographed by Roehm with the results of her Connecticut garden) captures flowers by bloom type showcasing them in a variety of exquisite arrangements. ”

Years of collecting china and vases yield a pretty astounding collection of tabletop patterns. Lilacs and tulips in a full spectrum of purple hues sit in a beautiful glass goblet as a centerpiece.

In a garden setting, the table is set in monochromatic white featuring stark white porcelain and delicate lilly of the valley.

My favorite! An abundant arrangement of pink peonies in a green glass vase read early summer.

What is more gorgeous than a just clipped arrangement of fresh June blooms? Here, she has paired peonies, rhododendron, geraniums, yellow baptista, nepeta and salvia in a free flowing robust and nature-driven arrangement.

Roses in pale peach and yellow are paired with charming pansies, raspberries and miniature apples in a dynamic mix.

The power of a single color is shown with the palest of pink roses. Ahh, beauties.

A Floral Arrangement & The Table Setting with Carolyne Roehm at Weatherstone

In this video, Carolyne introduces her Connecticut home, Weatherstone, and its gardens. Inspired by her newly published book, “Flowers” from Random House, this visit also provides a glimpse of the context in which “Flowers” was created.

Flowers” is an accumulation of years of dedication by Carolyne, not only were all the flowers in her new book grown in the magnificent Weatherstone gardens, but also for the first time, Carolyne photographed all of the images herself.

The video also shows how one of Carolyne’s hallmark arrangements is made and then placed for an evening.”

Many like this weather but it’s weird just the same.Last at Carlton Hobbes gallery in what was originally the beautiful Virginia Fair Vanderbilt mansion on East 91st Street, they had a booksigning forCarolyne Roehm and her new book simply called “Flowers.”Carolyne is a gardener and the photographs are from her gardens at her property in Northwestern Connecticut. So it’s a gardening book. She writes (with brevity) about her experience with her gardens but the book is something else beyond that.
